Bye-Bye Blueprint: 3D Modeling Catches On

David Becker

CNet, October 2004

Building information modeling (BIM), in which 3D computer models replace traditional 2D documents, is gaining ground in the field of architecture and building design. One of BIM's strongest points is to incorporate real-world data to enhance the accuracy, quality, and speed of architectural projects, as well as the management of the finished buildings. The full scale adoption of BIM requires rethinking business processes and the way how information is exchanged between parties.

In The Trenches with BIM

James Vandezande, AIA

AECbytes, July 2004

“Learning is not compulsory… neither is survival." -W. Edwards Deming. The question is no longer "Should we BIM," but when and where we start. Even if the industry as a whole is not completely ready for coordinated, interoperable virtual building projects, we should explore the vast possibilities that BIM offers us today. How to get started? How to set goals for your BIM initiative? How to manage change?

Why Building Information Modeling Isn’t Working ... yet

Ken Sanders, FAIA

Architectural Record, September 2004

Nearly 10 years after his seminal book, The Digital Architect, was published, architect Ken Sanders weighs in on the BIM discussion. Why can’t we make buildings like Boeing makes airplanes? Why are too many designers still taking a wait-and-see attitude about BIM?

Building Information Modeling in Action

How CAD, object CAD, and parametric technologies support this new approach

Rick Rundell, AIA

Cadalyst, May 2004

The buzz around building information modeling has prompted all of us in the industry to think about how we can create better building data. The article explores the various technologies being used to support this new approach to building design and summarize their overall effectiveness. A key part of this IT environment is some form of design technology - CAD, object CAD, or parametric building modeling.

Should We BIM?

Pushing the State of the Art in AEC

Lachmi Khemlani

Cadalyst, June 2003

After decades of being dominated by 2D CAD technology, the recent push to promote 3D Building Information Modeling (BIM) technology promises to substantially raise the state of the art in the AEC industry, and at the same time, alter it radically. The article reviews software tools that enable you to step into the world of BIM. http://www.building-connections.info

Building effectiveness communication ratios for improved building life cycle management

National University of Ireland, Cork, Ireland and

Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL), Berkeley, CA, USA 2005

This paper outlines a performance-based strategy utilizing building effectiveness communication ratios stored in Building Information Models (BIM). Decision makers will be capable of rating the building’s energy performance throughout its natural life cycle. With this approach, a progressive improvement in energy efficiency for the building stock is a realistic target.

BIM (Building Information Modeling) Update

Dianne Davis, President, AEC Infosystems

AIA, September 2003

BIM is what we all expected computer-aided design (CAD) to be, but now we know it requires information standards to be productive. Fortunately, we now have both information standards and software companies that support and empower them. The article discussed BIM process, benefits and standards that enable us to exchange information more cost effectively.

faceIT 2001 Nominee for the Best IT Application for Building and Facility Management: Project Development with Split Vision

IT Construction & Real Estate 2002 is a program for implementing IT in construction and facilities management. The program is managed by an industry owned consortium and supported by public research funds. As a part of the program, an award for "The best IT application for building and facility management 2001" is given annually. The team of Skanska Teknik and Solibri, presented by Pasi Paasiala, was a nominee with the following comments from the organizer:

”The project is an extremely advanced example of in-house software development using the cutting-edge technology on global level. It provides a platform for advanced data sharing to the users and supports strongly the IFC standardisation. The project sends a strong message to the other AEC/FM professionals and creates market-pull for the use of interoperable software in the industry, and therefore it will have a strong effect in the adoption of product model based processes.”
