Collaboration and innovation at Remmers Bouwgroep

In the dynamic world of construction, collaboration is essential for success. Remmers  Bouwgroep—a family-run business for 112 years currently in a growth phase—values collaboration highly. BIM Manager Joep Andries explains how they addressed challenges by combining technology, teamwork, and human interaction. Solibri plays a key role in streamlining their processes and improving communication between teams and partners

The importance of human interaction

“What we do is build. We’re proud of the buildings we create.” — Joep

Joep emphasizes the everyday challenge of bridging traditional construction and digital transformation. He notes that fast-paced change in the industry demands seamless communication across disciplines to manage project complexity while improving quality and speed. Solibri isn’t just a coordination tool, it helps keep data consistent and high quality throughout the building process.

The digital toolbox

Remmers uses a digital suite consisting of design software, CDE/issue management, and Solibri for coordination, verification, validation, and QA. The real power lies in tool integration and data utilization. Joep stresses:“The data that is requested must also be used; otherwise, the time and energy invested are wasted.” This aligns with IDS standards for standardized communication and efficient project execution.

Communication and clarity

Joep highlights the importance of visualizing data - especially within Solibri - to make projects tangible for clients and partners. A picture of a building or component can bridge understanding across stakeholders.

Growing together across generations

Digital transformation involves both younger, tech-savvy and experienced team members. Joep reflects on the shift from 2D to 3D: “When I started as a planner we didn't have the tools we have now. The transition to 3D was huge; it's improved collaboration.” This transition has boosted efficiency, cut failure costs, and undermined traditional ways of working, even if ROI is hard to quantify.

Standardized work packages & knowledge sharing

Remmers uses standardized “work packages” with predefined classifications for reusable efficiency and consistency. This approach simplifies integration for external partners. Joep also emphasizes the value of sharing insights to drive sector-wide innovation.

Simpler, more engaging, faster

Solibri is used not only by BIM superusers but also by occasional users for checks, classifications, cost estimates, and materials take-off. Joep advises starting with basic classifications and scaling up, allowing each team member to contribute: “Imagine if in the future you could treat a project like a game!”

A look towards automation & AI

Joep is optimistic: "AI and open standards will play a key role in streamlining processes and attracting younger workers, positioning construction as more dynamic and appealing".
