Why automated BIM checking matters

BIM quality checking is not a one-time task. On most projects, it is a workflow that repeats daily or weekly across every active model: opening files, selecting rulesets, running checks, reviewing results, generating reports, and distributing findings to coordination teams.

When that cycle is performed manually, it depends on individual availability, consistent execution, and the right model versions being in place at the right time. Across complex projects or project portfolios, manual checking cycles accumulate into a significant capacity constraint, and introduce inconsistency that undermines the reliability of quality governance.

Automated BIM checking solves this. By defining the workflow once and executing it on a schedule, teams ensure consistent results on every cycle, regardless of workload or availability.

What changes when BIM checking runs itself

The value of Autorun is not measured in cost lines. It is measured in the hours your BIM team stops spending on task execution, and the consistency that follows when that execution is no longer dependent on individual availability.

Your team starts every morning with results, not tasks

Schedule Autorun to run during evenings or overnight. By the time your team is at their desks, models have been updated and checked, BCF reports are prepared, and ITO data is current. The working day begins with issues to act on, not a workflow to set up. The checking cycle ran while no one was waiting for it.

One standard. Every cycle. No variation.

Manual checking introduces variation: which ruleset version was applied, whether the most recent model was loaded, who ran the check and when. Those variables affect quality outcomes in ways that are hard to track and difficult to correct. Autorun removes them. Define the workflow once. The same checks, the same configuration, and the same quality standard apply on every cycle, without exception.

BIM managers focus on resolution, not repetition

Experienced BIM managers and VDC leads generate the most value when coordinating issues, advising project teams, and making quality decisions. Repetitive manual checking consumes hours that should be directed at those activities. Autorun handles the execution. Your team's capacity goes toward the work that requires expertise, not the work that requires availability.

Quality checking becomes an organizational process, not a personal one

When checks run on a defined schedule and produce consistent documented outputs, quality assurance moves from individual effort to organizational practice. Every Autorun execution creates a verifiable quality record. That record supports governance reporting, internal accountability, and the kind of structured evidence that project teams and clients increasingly require.

What is Solibri Autorun

Solibri Autorun automates routine BIM quality assurance workflows on Windows and Mac’s. Users define a sequence of tasks in a workflow file: open or update models, apply rulesets and classifications, run rule-based checks, generate BCF reports, export ITO results, and save the model. Solibri executes the file via command line, desktop shortcut, or Windows Task Scheduler, delivering complete results without manual intervention.

Autorun is available in

  • Solibri Advanced
  • Solibri Premium

It is designed for teams that run BIM quality checks on a regular basis and want to remove the manual overhead from that process without changing how those checks work.

What makes Autorun exclusive to Advanced and Premium

Autorun is not a standalone tool. It extends the full Solibri platform: the same rule-based checking engine, the same IDS validators, the same classification frameworks, and the same integration infrastructure that Advanced and Premium are built around.

Autorun converts individual checking sessions into a governed, repeatable process. The same rules, the same configurations, and the same quality standard run on every cycle, every time, without depending on individual execution. Quality governance stops being something that happens when someone has time, and becomes something the organization can document and rely on.

Autorun scales that consistency across projects and portfolios. BIM quality is no longer limited by how many checking cycles a single BIM manager can complete in a working week. Checks run in parallel across disciplines, overnight, across every active project.

The automation also enables something manual checking cannot: a full audit trail. Every Autorun execution is a recorded quality event. That auditability supports internal governance, client reporting, and compliance documentation.

Automate your routine model checking cycle

Most BIM quality checking workflows follow a consistent pattern: open the latest model files, apply the correct ruleset and classification, run checks, review issues, create a presentation or export a BCF file, and save the updated model. Autorun executes every step of that pattern without requiring manual input at each stage.

Teams arrive to a complete set of results. Issues are identified, reports are ready for the morning coordination meeting, and the model has been saved. No setup time is required. Every checking cycle uses the same configuration, ensuring consistency across project stages and model versions.

A typical overnight workflow can automatically:

  • Open multiple IFC or SMC model files across disciplines
  • Update models that have newer versions on disk
  • Apply the defined rulesets and classifications
  • Run a full rule-based check
  • Add issue comments and snapshots to each result
  • Create or update a presentation view
  • Export a BCF report
  • Save the checked model

All in a single unattended session.

Connect Autorun to your systems

Autorun works with the storage and collaboration platforms your project teams already use. Models can be accessed from local drives, mapped network drives, and a range of cloud-based platforms, depending on your organization's infrastructure.

Supported connections include Autodesk Forma, Microsoft OneDrive, Microsoft SharePoint, Trimble Connect, SAP, local file paths, and mapped network drives. Remote file paths are configured in the workflow file. Once configured, every subsequent Autorun execution fetches the latest model version from the specified location at execution time.

Initial authentication for cloud-based providers must be completed manually through Solibri. After the first login, Autorun refreshes access automatically for recurring scheduled workflows, minimizing the need for repeated manual re-authentication.

What Solibri Autorun can do

Solibri Autorun covers every step a BIM team performs in a manual checking cycle. Each capability corresponds to a step your team already takes, and any combination can be sequenced in a single automated workflow. Available capabilities include:

Open, update, save, and close IFC, SMC, DWG, PDF, and E57, LAS and LAZ files automatically from local folders, network drives, or connected systems. Solibri detects which model files have changed and updates only those, keeping every checking cycle current without manual file management.

Apply the classifications and rulesets your organization has defined, including IDS information requirements and project-specific rule configurations, automatically at the start of every batch run. The same quality standard is applied consistently, every time.

Run the full Solibri rule-based checking process automatically. Issues are identified, commented, and assigned severity levels. Zoomed snapshots are added to each result. All outputs feed directly into reporting and coordination workflows.

Export coordination issue reports in BCF format, the open standard used by BIM coordination tools across the industry, directly to local folders, shared drives, or connected platforms. Compatible with all major issue management tools and CDE environments.

Run Information Takeoff (ITO) quantity calculations and export results to Excel automatically. Supports both plain Excel exports and custom-branded templates. Estimating, cost planning, and procurement teams receive updated quantity data on every cycle without requesting it from the BIM team.

Generate structured Excel summaries of checking results (what was checked, how many issues were found, and at what severity) using branded templates. Suitable for project managers, quality leads, and client reporting workflows.

Produce full coordination reports in Excel and general issue reports in PDF or RTF format. All reports can be written to local paths, shared network folders, or connected platforms. Reports are ready for distribution when your team starts work.

Create issue presentation views from checking results automatically, or update existing views as new checking cycles complete. Presentations can also be synchronized with an imported BCF file, keeping issue status current across disciplines.

Target specific models, presentations, rulesets, or reports by name within a workflow. Autorun supports wildcard and pattern-based targeting so that complex, multi-project batch configurations can be managed precisely, without creating separate workflows for every file variant.

Scale your capacity with Solibri Tokens

Autorun uses a token consumption model. Tokens are deducted only when a run completes successfully. A failed or incomplete run does not consume tokens. This means your team pays only for the quality checks that deliver results.

Each Solibri Advanced and Solibri Premium plan includes a starting allocation of tokens that renews with your plan.

1 Autorun execution = 100 tokens

Included with your plan:

  • Solibri Advanced: 1,750 tokens per year, ~17 runs

How to set up and launch Autorun

Setting up Solibri Autorun requires three steps. Once configured, the workflow runs unattended. Solibri opens, executes every task in sequence, and exits automatically when complete.

Step 1

First, create a workflow file that defines the tasks Solibri should execute. The file can be written in any text editor and saved alongside project data. Solibri provides downloadable example files and a full task reference in the Developer Platform documentation.

Step 2

Second, configure how Autorun is launched. Three options are available: create a desktop shortcut for on-demand execution; create a batch file for scripted launches from the command line or other automated systems; or configure Windows Task Scheduler to execute the batch file at a defined time, such as nightly at 22:00.

Step 3

Third, confirm that the role and resource configuration in Solibri matches the intended checking context. If a role has been selected in a previous Solibri session, the resources connected to that role, including classifications and rulesets, are loaded automatically when Autorun starts, in addition to any resources specified in the workflow file.
